Remembering When

Joe And I had supper at Yaws Restaurant tonight. Boy did that bring back memories for him. You see, Joe was in this restaurant way back in 1957. He and some of his high school buddies hopped in his uncle's 57 Chevy and drove from Milwaukie to Portland for a hamburger one night.  If you follow this link, then click on the little buttons across the top, you will see  Yaws and the wonderful story.  The restaurant closed in the 80's and just reopened this past September.
We were seated in a booth with a street view as soon as we walked in the door, but I had a light jacket on, and commented that I was really cold and would it be possible to move away from the window. We were promptly moved to a table right by the fireplace. WOW!
I ordered a patty melt and Joe had a regular size burger that was so big he could hardly get his mouth open wide enough to take a bite.  When I saw the size of the patty melt, I right away asked for a "to go box". So I have lunch for tomorrow too. I can't even begin to describe the fountain deserts. Joe and I shared a banana split. If you click on the picture you can get a better idea of the size of it.  So good.
This is the fountain centered in the middle of the restaurant.  All the servers are dressed in the 50's attire. The manager ( who told Joe this was his retiree job) circulated visiting with diners. He and Joe hit it off right away when he found out Joe was a retiree with a job too.
Old soda bottles lined the shelf above the soda fountain.
This was the view leaving the restaurant. Sorry about the quality of the picture. I was using my iPhone camera.  It says YAWS over the entrance. This is the kind of place you want to share with everyone. We are already planning who we are going to invite to go with us next time. All ages enjoy, but those of us who remember the good times of the 50' will be really special.
