CABBAGE AND NOODLES

I get Guideposts Magazine each month. I happened to be thumbing through it today and found this recipe. My first thoughts were  Cabbage and Noodles?  I don't think so. But I read the inspirational story that went with it, and my mind kept going back to that combination.... Cabbage and Noodles.  So I shut off the dryer, (I was doing laundry and I never leave the house with appliances on)  and headed for Fred Meyers. I picked out a nice, firm, medium head of cabbage, and a box of Barilla Whole Grain Rotini. When I got back home, I grabbed my Magic Chef Chopper and started chopping the cabbage and onion. I didn't realize how that cabbage grows after it is chopped up. I should have paid more attention when it read use a LARGE  skillet. I was about half finished with the chopping when I realized the skillet I normally use (for the three of us)  was way to small. So I grabbed my step ladder, and got the LARGE skillet from the top shelf of the pantry and payed a little better  attention to the directions in preparing the dish, Which is so unusual for me. Most the time I just "do it my way"  When it was finished, I thought to myself, what am I going to do with all of this. Joe probably won't like it, and neither will Viola. Boy was I wrong. Joe tried a little sauce dish first, said it wasn't bad, (but in my head that could have meant it's not good either)  He said I'd like to try some more only this time with a little vinegar. VINEGAR I thought.... He's going to make a bad dish worse.  He dished up the amount he wanted, finished it, AND went back for a third helping. In between, he took a small sauce dish into his mom she cleaned it up, and asked for more, this time a larger bowl.  Well..........., I'm happy to announce there is just barely enough left out of that large dish casserole, for one more small serving.  Who would have "thunk". Part of the article said "The dish originated in Poland, where cabbage,unlike so many other foods, was a plentiful and cheap source of nourishment for peasant families. The recipe had made its way to Germany and her mother brought it to America and taught it to her." Joe reminded me he and his mom are of German decent. :)

  2. Betty, you are a true kitchen wonder! Takes a lot of courage to go right out and get stuff to whip up a new recipe...and then to have it almost all gone now...wonderful! I love cabbage and that sounds like my kind of dish!!

  3. What a keeper I love cabbage and I love noodles. Ever fried egg noodles? Boil them, drain, dust with a bunch of flour and fry in butter. Oh gheez so unhealthy....but I get them really crunchy...I can eat a whole pan.

  4. Cabbage is really good. Whenever I cook a chicken with veggies in the CrockPot, I take out the Chicken and veggies to use for dinners then thrown in 1/2 head of cabbage in the chicken broth to use for soup later. It's very good.

  5. My German grandother served both mashed potatoes and home made noodles (from scratch) with sauerkraut.
